Barbados steps up swine fever defence

The Caribbean nation is intensifying its measures to safeguard its agriculture sector from the threat of African Swine Fever, a highly infectious and deadly disease that has ravaged farms in other parts of the world. The country’s clean record to date has been highlighted, but regional officials warn that the risk of the disease breaching the island’s borders remains real.

Agricultural officials are taking a multi-faceted approach to boost the country’s biosecurity, including increased surveillance and collaboration with neighboring countries to share intelligence on potential breaches. The government is also working closely with farmers to educate them on best practices and protocols to prevent the spread of the disease.

With the island’s rich agricultural sector under scrutiny, Barbados is taking a proactive stance to ensure its farms remain safe and healthy, a crucial step in preserving the nation’s food security and economic stability.
