In a bid to strengthen the island’s defenses against the highly contagious swine fever virus, Barbados has stepped up its efforts to detect and respond to outbreaks. The government has increased the frequency of swine fever testing at slaughterhouses and markets, as well as implemented new protocols for monitoring and controlling infected animals.
The move comes as the virus continues to spread across the Caribbean, posing a significant threat to the region’s swine industry. Barbados, which has historically been a major producer and exporter of pork, has a vested interest in protecting its swine population from the virus.
With the help of international partners, including the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Barbados is implementing a range of measures to prevent the spread of the virus, including enhanced surveillance, improved biosecurity practices, and increased public awareness campaigns.
While the situation remains fluid, the government’s proactive approach to defending against swine fever is a welcome step towards protecting the island’s swine industry and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector.
