Rising Beat Architect: Inside the Studio with Producer Zylan Beats

In the heart of Kingston’s creative district, where the pulse of dancehall never stops, producer Zylan Beats has quietly established himself as one of the genre’s most innovative sound designers. With production credits on over 40 chart-topping tracks in the past three years, the 28-year-old beat maker is reshaping the sonic landscape of contemporary dancehall.

From Bedroom Studio to Industry Standard

Zylan’s journey began in his grandmother’s living room with a secondhand mixing console and pirated software. “I didn’t have much, but I had obsession,” he recalls with a laugh. What started as late-night experimentation evolved into a signature soundโ€”crisp 808s layered with traditional dancehall percussion, creating what critics are calling “neo-dancehall fusion.”

His breakthrough came in 2021 when reggae-dancehall sensation Vybz Kartel recorded over one of his beats. The track “Digital Vibes” went viral on TikTok, accumulating over 50 million streams and introducing Zylan’s production to a global audience.

The Signature Sound

What sets Zylan apart is his refusal to follow formulaic production trends. While many producers rely on repetitive loops, Zylan crafts layered compositions that evolve throughout each track. “Every eight bars should surprise the listener,” he explains during a studio session. “Dancehall is about energy and movementโ€”your production should reflect that dynamism.”

His current go-to equipment includes a combination of vintage and cutting-edge technology: Ableton Live software, SSL mixing board, and Neumann U87 microphones. But according to Zylan, the real magic happens in the arrangement stage, where he spends up to 60% of his production time.

Collaborations and Recent Projects

Recent work includes productions for emerging artists Shelly-Ann and Ricky General, both achieving significant streaming success. He’s also working on a collaborative EP with producer Chronic Law, set for release next quarter.

“The dancehall community is more collaborative than people realize,” Zylan notes. “We’re all pushing the same sound forward. Competition exists, but respect is paramount.”

Mentorship and Industry Vision

Beyond production, Zylan has begun mentoring younger producers through Soundwave Academy Kingston, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing musical talent in underprivileged communities. He teaches production fundamentals and business strategy to over 15 students weekly.

“I remember struggling to understand music theory and production basics,” he says. “If I can make that journey easier for someone else, I’ve succeeded.”

Looking Forward

When asked about his five-year plan, Zylan’s ambitions extend beyond personal accolades. He aims to establish a state-of-the-art recording facility in Jamaica’s midlands region and create an incubator program for emerging producers. “Dancehall production talent is distributed across the island, but opportunity isn’t,” he observes. “That’s what I want to change.”

As streaming numbers continue to validate his artistic vision and major labels increasingly seek his production services, one thing remains constant: Zylan’s commitment to authenticity. In an industry sometimes tempted by commercial shortcuts, his philosophy is refreshingly straightforwardโ€”make timeless music, respect the roots, and never stop innovating.
